What strategies are effective when a literature review yields very few relevant sources?

Early searches sometimes return limited results. This can feel discouraging, especially in emerging topics.I want practical guidance on how experienced researchers proceed.

From my experience supervising early-stage projects, sparse literature often signals opportunity rather than failure. I have seen researchers broaden keywords, move across adjacent disciplines, or shift from articles to reports and theses. I would recommend revisiting your research scope and terminology, as small conceptual adjustments can unlock relevant work. Limited sources can ultimately strengthen a study by forcing clarity and originality in the research question.
