How can literature mapping tools be effectively used in a literature review?

Literature reviews often become unmanageably large.Mapping tools promise structure and overview.I want to understand how to use them without oversimplifying research.

From my experience supervising literature reviews, mapping tools are most effective early in the process. I have seen them help students identify clusters, gaps, and dominant conversations before deep reading begins. I would recommend treating maps as provisional thinking devices rather than final representations. Used flexibly, they support synthesis and direction while leaving room for nuance and critical judgment.
