How does a literature review differ from literature mapping in academic research?

Both terms are often used interchangeably in research discussions. However, they seem to serve different analytical purposes.Understanding this distinction would help structure my research more effectively.

From my experience guiding early-stage researchers, literature mapping usually comes before a full review. I have seen mapping work as a way to survey the field, identify clusters, and spot gaps without deep critique. A literature review, by contrast, demands evaluation and synthesis. I would recommend using mapping to orient yourself broadly, then transitioning into a focused review once your research question becomes sharper.
