Is it necessary for a research problem to be derived directly from the literature review?

Some researchers begin with real-world problems.Others emphasize gaps identified through reading.I want clarity on how experienced scholars approach this issue.

From my experience mentoring researchers, a strong research problem almost always engages with the literature, even if it begins elsewhere. I have seen practical concerns evolve into solid academic questions only after being tested against existing scholarship. I would recommend viewing the literature review as a refinement tool rather than a constraint. It ensures the problem is original, relevant, and positioned within an ongoing scholarly conversation.
