How can a researcher determine the most appropriate methodology for literary and comparative analysis?

Methodological choices shape how literary arguments are made.In comparative work, the options can feel overwhelming.I want guidance on how scholars make informed methodological decisions.

From my experience mentoring graduate researchers, methodology should emerge from the question, not the other way around. I have seen strong projects fail when methods were borrowed uncritically. I would recommend starting with what you want to compare—texts, themes, histories, or discourses—and then selecting theories that illuminate those relationships. In literary studies, methodological clarity often matters more than methodological novelty.
