Narrative synthesis summarizes and interprets findings descriptively, often thematically. Quantitative meta-analysis statistically pools numerical results from comparable studies. Meta-analysis is appropriate only when studies are sufficiently homogeneous in design and outcomes. Narrative synthesis is necessary with high heterogeneity or diverse study types. Its main challenges are avoiding subjective interpretation, ensuring transparency, and rigorously explaining how conclusions are drawn from the disparate evidence.
