Why Don’t We Have Great Playwrights Anymore‑ The State of Stage Drama

It feels like we don't have towering playwrights like Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams anymore. Is writing for the stage actually in decline, and if so, why?

It's less about a decline in talent and more about a massive shift in the cultural and economic landscape. Film and television have become the dominant narrative forms, offering writers much broader reach and better pay. This has shrunk the professional ecosystem for playwrights. Theater's magic—its liveness and language—is still unique, but its audience is now more niche. It's sustained by university programs, government subsidies, and festivals rather than being at the center of popular culture.
