How should the concept of a hero be defined today?

In my work on contemporary political rhetoric and narrative, the term "hero" is deployed constantly, yet its meaning feels diluted or contested. I'm wrestling with developing an operational definition that accounts for post-colonial, feminist, and anti-heroic critiques. Is there a framework that captures altruism, flaw, and social construction in today's context?

This is a vital question I grapple with in my seminars. I recommend moving away from a single definition and instead think of the "hero" as a dynamic, contested cultural script. Today, I have seen compelling definitions focus on vulnerable agency individuals, often from marginalized groups, acting courageously within systemic constraints without the guarantee of triumph or purity. The modern hero is frequently an amplifier of collective voice rather than a solitary conqueror, and their "flaw" is often a necessary human complexity, not a tragic flaw.
