What factors have contributed to the commonly perceived decline of serious dramatic writing?

I often encounter arguments that dramatic writing has lost its former vitality. These claims appear across literary criticism, theatre studies, and popular discourse.I want to understand whether this decline is real and what factors may explain it.

From my experience studying and teaching drama, the idea of decline often reflects changing contexts rather than artistic failure. I have seen how film, television, and digital media reshaped audience expectations and funding structures for theatre. I would recommend viewing this not as a loss of talent, but as a shift in where dramatic energy is expressed. Serious drama still exists, but it often appears in hybrid forms or marginalized spaces rather than mainstream stages.
