What is considered the definitive biographical study of William Faulkner?
I am looking for a comprehensive biography that is widely regarded as definitive. The aim is to understand Faulkner’s life alongside his literary development. This is for serious academic reading rather than a popular introduction.

From my experience in Faulkner scholarship, Joseph Blotner’s two-volume biography is still considered the definitive work. I have seen it consistently cited because of its depth, archival access, and careful balance between Faulkner’s personal life and literary production. I would recommend it especially for doctoral-level research, as it documents manuscripts, correspondence, and historical context in exceptional detail. While newer biographies exist, none have displaced Blotner’s work in terms of scholarly authority.
