How should the main themes of I Am Not Your Negro be interpreted?
In my media studies research, I'm focusing on theme reception. For this film, themes like innocence, racial mythology, and fear are clear, but their interpretation seems contested. I’m asking for guidance on the most productive critical framework to apply for a scholarly interpretation.

Interpreting these themes requires moving beyond listing them. In my experience, you must see them as interconnected strands of a single argument. The theme of “innocence” isn’t just naivete; interpret it as a willful, violent refusal by white America to know itself. The themes of “fear” and “mythology” are the engine and fuel of that innocence. I would recommend a dialectical approach: see how each theme exists only in tension with its opposite, revealing the deep contradictions Baldwin insists we confront.
