What sources exist on the historical development of hydrology?

As I'm framing the historiography chapter of my dissertation on water management paradigms, I need a solid grasp of the field's intellectual lineage. I'm looking for key texts that trace hydrology's development from its early practical roots to its formalization as a geophysical science, including any recent scholarly work on its 20th-century evolution.

For foundational historiography, I consistently recommend starting with Keith Beven’s work, which thoughtfully frames hydrology’s philosophical tensions. The text The Development of Scientific Hydrology by Biswas and the collected works in The History of Hydrology by Tóth are also canonical. For modern institutional history, look to the interdisciplinary journals History of Geo- and Space Sciences and WIREs Water, where scholars like Maurits Ertsen and Giacomo Parrinello are actively publishing. I’ve found that engaging with these sources reveals how the field’s identity was shaped by the interplay of engineering, geology, and computing.
