In what ways do history and travel literature intersect?
My interdisciplinary project looks at narratives of the Silk Road. I keep hitting this rich overlap where a text is clearly both a historical document and a literary travelogue. I'm trying to move beyond vague notions of "intersection" and pinpoint the concrete scholarly spaces like genre studies, postcolonial theory, or spatial history where these two disciplines most productively meet and inform one another.

Their intersection is most vibrant in specific scholarly practices. In my work, I actively employ spatial history methods using travelogues to map historical perception alongside geography. They also intersect in postcolonial critique, where both historians and literary scholars deconstruct narratives of power and representation. Furthermore, the shared focus on narrative how a story of a journey or an era is constructed creates common ground. I recommend looking at this intersection as a collaborative workshop, not just a library shelf.
