What’s the difference between a Statement of Purpose and a Personal Statement for PhD applications‑ Do I need both?
Some applications ask for a "Statement of Purpose," others for a "Personal Statement," and some for both. I'm confused about how to split my story and credentials between the two documents without being repetitive.

Treat them as two distinct chapters of your story. The Statement of Purpose (SOP) is your professional research plan: What do you want to study? Why here? With whom? It's forward-looking, specific, and analytical. The Personal Statement (PS) is your intellectual biography: What life experiences, identities, or values shape your approach to scholarship? It can address diversity, obstacles overcome, or broader intellectual passions. If submitting both, the SOP is mandatory and carries more weight; the PS is supplemental. Never repeat content verbatim. Use the PS to explain why you care about the research questions you outline in the SOP. When in doubt, lean heavier on research specifics; committees prioritize scholarly potential above all.
