How long should a PhD Statement of Purpose be‑ Is there a strict word count that top programs expect?

I'm drafting my SOP and see conflicting advice online. Some say one page, others say two. Do admissions committees really stop reading after a certain point, or do they value depth over brevity?

From my experience on admissions committees, the unspoken rule is 1.5 to 2 pages, single-spaced (approx. 800-1200 words), unless specified otherwise. The first page must grab attention; if it's vague, they may not continue. We value density of insight, not volume of words. Every sentence should serve a purpose: revealing your research journey, technical maturity, or fit with the program. I recommend writing a comprehensive draft first, then ruthlessly editing for clarity and impact. A tight, compelling 900-word SOP is always stronger than a meandering 1500-word one. Ultimately, it's not about length, but about leaving no doubt about your readiness and focus.
