How critical is it to have a clearly defined research proposal within the Statement of Purpose for a STEM PhD?
I'm applying for PhDs in Electrical Engineering. I have broad interests in antenna design but haven't narrowed to a specific thesis topic. Is it a major weakness if my SOP discusses my interests and preparation but doesn't present a formal, detailed proposal?

For STEM PhDs, you need specificity, but not a locked-in dissertation title. Committees don't expect a final proposal, but they need evidence you can formulate a plausible research direction. I recommend this structure: 1) Identify a broad challenge area (e.g., "efficient wideband MIMO arrays for 6G"). 2) Demonstrate familiarity with its open problems by citing 2-3 key papers. 3) Propose 1-2 specific, novel ideas or approaches you'd like to explore (e.g., "I'm interested in applying metasurface concepts to mitigate mutual coupling"). This shows you're at the idea-generation stage, which is perfect. The red flag is vagueness ("I want to improve antennas"). Show you can think like a researcher by framing questions, not just stating interests. Your plan can—and should—evolve after you join.
