How should I address a low GPA or a weak grade in a major course within my Statement of Purpose?

My overall GPA is decent, but I got a C in a core Algorithms course during a particularly difficult semester. My transcript will show it. Should I ignore it and hope they don't notice, or address it head-on in my SOP to explain the context?

Address it briefly, constructively, and once. Don't ignore a glaring weakness; committees will see it. Dedicate one concise sentence in your SOP, preferably not in the opening. Frame it as a learning experience. For example: "Although my performance in Algorithms during [Semester] did not meet my standards, that experience taught me the value of [seeking help early / collaborative study], a lesson I applied to excel in subsequent advanced courses like [X and Y]." Immediately pivot to counter-evidence: highlight strong grades in other major courses, a stellar thesis grade, or relevant project work. The goal is to show resilience and growth, not make excuses. Do not dwell on it; spend 95% of the SOP on your strengths and research vision.
