What is data cleansing?

What exactly does data cleansing mean and how can I do it? Any suggestions?

Simply put, data cleansing is deletion of old or useless data from a data set. This method may use parsing or other methods to get rid of syntax errors, typographical errors or fragments of records.

Technically speaking, data cleaning, also called data cleansing, is the process of ensuring that your data is correct, consistent and useable by identifying any errors in the data and correcting or deleting them. Data cleansing has several benefits.
It removes major errors and inconsistencies that are inevitable
Fewer errors
The ability to map the different functions and what your data is intended to do and where it is coming from your data.
