Mediator in SEM model

My mentor introduced me to a new term called mediator. Let me tell you I am using SEM model in my study and according to my mentor, a mediator is a significant term in the SEM model. I have no idea about what is it. Please help me.

In statistics, a mediation model is one that tries to identify and explain the mechanism or process that underlies an observed relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable via the inclusion of a third hypothetical variable, known as a mediator variable.
