Is Talcott Parsons’ concept of the “sick role” still relevant within modern healthcare systems?

The sick role was developed in a different medical era.Healthcare systems and patient expectations have changed significantly.I want to know whether sociologists still find this concept meaningful.

From my experience teaching medical sociology, the sick role still has value but mainly as a reference point. I have seen it work best for understanding acute illness and institutional expectations, not chronic or contested conditions. I would recommend using it critically, alongside newer frameworks that emphasize patient agency and inequality. Its relevance today lies less in direct application and more in highlighting how medical norms have shifted.
