From my experience reading medical history, people affected by Hansen’s Disease often lived under conditions of enforced isolation and social exclusion. I have seen accounts of leprosaria that provided basic shelter but limited autonomy and dignity. I would recommend understanding these conditions as products of fear and moral judgment rather than medical necessity. Their living conditions reveal how societies historically managed illness through segregation rather than care.
