How does T.S. Eliot employ symbolism in The Waste Land?
The Waste Land is often described as symbolically dense. However, the nature of Eliot’s symbolism is not always clear.I want to understand how symbols function structurally and thematically.

From my experience studying modernist poetry, Eliot’s symbolism in The Waste Land is cumulative rather than allegorical. I have seen students struggle when they search for fixed meanings instead of patterns. I would recommend reading the symbols as recurring cultural fragments that echo spiritual emptiness, historical collapse, and the desire for renewal. Eliot’s symbols gain power through juxtaposition and repetition, not through one-to-one correspondence, which is central to his modernist technique.
