How does artificial neural network work?

I want to choose an artificial neural network as my research topic. Before finalizing the topic I want to know how it functions. Any suggestions?

The artificial neural networks receives input signal from the external world in the form of patterns and images in the form of vector. The input is multiplied by its corresponding weight. If the weighted sum is equal to zero then a bias is added to the output scale to the response of the system or non-zero.

If the output generates an undesired result then the weights need to be added. However, if we obtain the desired result then you need not add any weights.
