Have there been serious attempts to develop an open-source alternative to Factiva?

Factiva is widely used but costly and closed. Researchers and journalists often seek open alternatives.I want to know whether viable open-source efforts exist.

From my experience working with digital research tools, there have been attempts, but none fully replicate Factiva’s scope. I have seen partial solutions using open news APIs, web scraping, and library consortia. I would recommend viewing this as an ecosystem rather than a single replacement. Open tools can cover specific needs, but commercial databases still dominate comprehensive archival access.
