What are the common criticisms of VOSviewer as a tool, and what are its main alternatives (e.g., CiteSpace, Bibliometrix R-package)?

In our lab, we primarily use VOSviewer for its accessibility. However, when reading broader literature, I encounter critiques and see other tools being used. To make an informed choice for future projects, I need a balanced view. What are the most frequent scholarly criticisms of VOSviewer’s capabilities or assumptions? And what are the main alternative platforms, like CiteSpace, and what unique advantages do they offer for different analytical goals?

In my experience, VOSviewer is rightly praised for usability but critiqued for its relatively static, snapshot analysis. The main criticism is its weaker handling of temporal dynamics and emerging trend detection compared to a tool like CiteSpace, which excels at mapping evolutionary pathways and citation bursts. For more comprehensive statistical bibliometrics, the Bibliometrix R-package is far more powerful. I would recommend VOSviewer for clear, intuitive network mapping, but if your research question involves evolution over time or deeper statistical integration, you should seriously consider these alternatives to complement or replace it.
