What barriers might prevent your target participants from engaging with your study, and how will you address these to ensure adequate enrollment?

As I finalize my recruitment plan, I'm thinking pragmatically about the real-world constraints of my target population. These could be logistical, like time and travel, or psychological, like mistrust of research. I need to brainstorm proactive solutions now to avoid a critical shortfall in enrollment later, which could jeopardize the entire project's viability.

From my experience, the most common barriers are time burden, access issues, and a lack of perceived benefit or trust. I’ve seen studies flounder by not addressing these upfront. I would recommend building reciprocity directly into your design offer flexible scheduling, remote participation options, and clear, jargon-free communication about the study's value to them. Compensate fairly for their time and expertise. To build trust, partner with community gatekeepers who can vouch for your work. This pragmatic approach turns barriers into respectful engagement.
