What core aspects of your research problem necessitate the collection of first-hand data instead of relying on existing datasets?

In designing my dissertation, I'm weighing the significant resource investment of primary data collection against using secondary datasets. I need to articulate a strong, principled justification for this choice in my proposal, moving beyond mere convenience to core methodological requirements.

In my experience, the necessity for first-hand data arises from core gaps in existing knowledge. I would recommend primary collection when your research question involves novel constructs, specific contextual variables, or nuanced participant experiences that aren't captured in available datasets. I have seen many projects stall because they tried to force a secondary dataset to answer a question it was never designed to address. The investment is justified when the integrity of your findings depends on measuring exactly what you theorize.
