How can you structure survey questions and response options to minimize participant fatigue while maximizing the richness and accuracy of the data you obtain?
I know participant fatigue leads to straight-lining, drop-offs, and unreliable data. I want to apply design principles that show respect for my participants' time and cognitive load. What are the best practices for structuring the flow, question types, and response scales to maximize engagement and the richness of the responses throughout the entire survey?

I recommend a few key principles. First, sequence questions logically, moving from broad to specific and grouping related topics to minimize mental switching. Use a mix of question formats (e.g., a matrix followed by an open-ended) to maintain engagement. Limit matrix questions to 5-7 items and consistently label all points on your Likert scales. Crucially, be ruthless with length ask, "Is this question essential?" I’ve seen data quality plummet after 15 minutes. A progress bar and polite wording also reduce perceived burden, encouraging thoughtful, accurate responses.
