Formulas used to calculate sample size?

Hey, I am in the 2nd year of my PhD, and my research is related to statistical analysis. I know everything regarding my study except the formulas used to calculate the sample size, which is not letting me move forward. Please help.

Here is the formula used in our Sample Size Calculator:
Sample Size
Where:
Z = Z value (e.g. 1.96 for 95% confidence level)
p = percentage picking a choice, expressed as decimal
(.5 used for sample size needed)
c = confidence interval, expressed as decimal
(e.g., .04 = ±4)
