What is a reasonable timeline from submission to publication for a journal article?
I submitted my first paper three months ago and haven't heard back. Is this normal? What are the typical stages and how long does each take in fields like life sciences or social sciences?

Patience is non-negotiable. A typical timeline for a successful submission (no desk rejection) is 6-12 months from submission to online publication. Here's the breakdown: Editorial Screening (Desk Review): 1-4 weeks. Peer Review: 2-4 months (this is where most delay occurs, waiting for reviewers). First Decision: Usually "Major Revision." Author Revision Period: 1-3 months (you). Re-review by Editor/Reviewers: 1-2 months. Final Acceptance. Production (copyediting, typesetting, proofing): 1-3 months. In fast-moving fields or with certain journals, it can be quicker; in humanities or top-tier venues, longer. Three months without a first decision is common but at the upper limit; a polite inquiry to the editor is acceptable. Always be working on your next paper while you wait.
