The Journal Prestige Trap: Does a Fancy Name Guarantee Good Science?

When evaluating research, is it safe to assume an article in a top-tier journal like Nature is automatically higher quality than one in a lesser-known journal?

Not at all. A journal's reputation is a helpful heuristic, but it's not a guarantee. Groundbreaking work can be published in mid-tier or newer journals for various reasons (scope, novelty, author preference). Conversely, prestigious journals have retracted high-profile studies due to flaws or fraud. The only true measure of quality is a critical reading of the content itself—its methodology, data, and logic. Don't let the brand name do the thinking for you.
