How can one find a topic for graduate research?

I'm at the start of my graduate journey and feel paralyzed by the blank slate. I have general interests but struggle to narrow down to a specific, researchable gap. I need a practical framework that moves beyond just "read the literature" to actively generate and evaluate potential thesis topics that are both significant and manageable within a PhD timeframe.

Start by auditing your genuine curiosities and past coursework for persistent questions. Then, conduct a structured literature review with a gap-hunting mindset; I always look for phrases like "it is unclear" or "future work should." Talk to senior PhDs about the messy, unsolved problems they’ve encountered. I would recommend prototyping a small experiment or model on a candidate topic immediately. This hands-on test is the best way to see if the question is truly engaging and feasible before you over-commit. Your topic should feel like a puzzle you're obsessed with solving.
