What qualities should a candidate have when seeking a PhD position in biological sciences?
As I consider advising prospective PhD applicants, I'm looking beyond grades and test scores. From your experience on admissions committees, what are the intangible qualities the mindset or approach that truly help a candidate thrive in the demanding environment of a modern biosciences lab?

Based on my years on admissions panels and supervising doctoral students, I would recommend looking for a specific blend of qualities. Beyond technical competence, I have seen that resilience is paramount the ability to persevere through repeated experimental failures. A genuine, driving curiosity that leads them to ask their own questions is more valuable than simply executing protocols. Finally, strong communication skills and ethical integrity are non-negotiable for collaborative science. Seek the candidate who is a persistent, thoughtful problem-solver.
