What are the advantages and disadvantages of open-access versus subscription journals?

I'm preparing my first major paper and my supervisor is leaving the choice of journal to me. I'm torn between the obvious benefit of wider readership with open-access and the perceived prestige of established subscription journals. Beyond the basic definitions, I need a pragmatic take on how this choice impacts citation potential, career advancement, and even future collaborations in today's academic landscape.

This is a critical strategic decision. From my experience, you must weigh immediate costs against long-term reach. Reputable open-access (OA) journals, like those from PLOS or BMC, often provide faster publication and demonstrably higher download counts, which can lead to more diverse citations. However, the APC can be steep if your grant doesn't cover it. Traditional high-impact subscription journals still hold immense weight for hiring and promotion committees. I recommend a hybrid strategy: target a leading specialty journal first for prestige; for subsequent work, consider solid OA venues to build a public portfolio that showcases your work's practical relevance.
