What are the main sociological theories scholars use to explain how preferences are formed?
This question comes up when comparing economic and sociological models of choice.I’m trying to move beyond individualistic explanations of preference. The goal is to understand how social structures and culture shape what people want.

From my experience working across sociology and economics, I’ve seen that sociologists rarely treat preferences as given. Instead, theories like socialization and habitus emphasize how what feels “natural” is socially learned over time. I would recommend paying attention to how institutional settings and power relations quietly structure choice. Even rational choice approaches in sociology tend to situate calculation within norms and expectations. What looks like personal taste often reflects accumulated social experience rather than autonomous decision-making.
