Who are considered the primary agents of socialization in society?

Socialization is central to sociological theory. Different institutions shape values and behavior across the life course.I want to clarify which agents sociologists consider most influential.

From my experience teaching introductory sociology, family, education, peer groups, and media consistently emerge as the primary agents of socialization. I have seen how their influence shifts across the life course, with family dominant early and peers and media gaining importance later. I would recommend viewing these agents as interconnected rather than competing. Socialization is cumulative, shaped by overlapping institutions rather than a single dominant source.
