How can the concept of family be understood sociologically in today’s social context?

Family structures have diversified across societies.Traditional definitions no longer capture lived realities.I am seeking a sociological lens suited to these changes.

From my experience teaching sociology, family today is best understood as a flexible social institution rather than a fixed structure. I have seen research emphasize practices of care, obligation, and belonging over legal or biological definitions. I would recommend focusing on how families function in everyday life, especially under economic and cultural pressures. This approach reflects how sociologists now study family as lived reality.
