How can a profession and a professional group be defined from a sociological perspective?

Terms like profession and professional group are often used loosely. Sociology treats them as analytically distinct concepts.I want a clearer sociological understanding of the difference.

From my experience teaching the sociology of work, a profession is usually defined by institutionalized expertise, credentials, and public trust. I have seen professional groups described more broadly as collectives sharing an occupation or identity, even without full professional status. I would recommend treating professions as an achieved social position, while professional groups reflect ongoing struggles for recognition, authority, and legitimacy.
