From my experience conducting inequality research, socioeconomic status is usually measured through a combination of income, education, and occupation. I have seen composite indices used to capture social position more accurately than single indicators. I would recommend being sensitive to context, as the meaning of status varies across societies. Sociologists treat SES as relational, not merely economic, reflecting access to resources and life chances.
