In Qualitative Research which is more meaningful, Virtual vs in-person interviews and focal groups?

My research involves sensitive topics where rapport and non-verbal cues are significant. While virtual tools increase accessibility for participants, I'm concerned about losing the embodied, shared presence of an in-person meeting. I need to weigh these trade-offs from a data quality perspective, not just a logistical one.

Having conducted both, I recommend the choice hinges on your topic and participants, not a universal rule. For sensitive topics or building deep rapport, in-person often feels more contained and allows full somatic attunement, which I've seen yield profound disclosures. However, virtual spaces can feel safer for some, promoting openness. Meaningfulness comes from careful design within your chosen mode. Ensure crystal-clear audio, a stable connection, and extended time for virtual check-ins to build trust. The medium shapes, but does not determine, the depth of connection.
