How is historiographic metafiction typically classified within postmodern literary studies?

The term appears frequently in postmodern criticism. However, its scope and classification can feel ambiguous.I want a clearer sense of how scholars situate it theoretically.

From my experience teaching postmodern fiction, historiographic metafiction is best understood as a submode rather than a rigid category. I have seen it used to describe texts that simultaneously question historical truth and narrative authority. I would recommend treating it as a critical lens within postmodernism, one that exposes how histories are constructed, narrated, and contested rather than simply recorded.
