Can anyone recommend recent studies on Portugal–Brazil commercial relations in the early modern period?
I'm developing a chapter on mercantile networks and need contemporary sources. The field moves quickly, and I want to cite the latest debates. Foundational works like those by Boxer are a starting point, but I need what's being published now.

I would recommend moving beyond the classic administrative histories. Recently, I've seen excellent scholarship employing network analysis to map merchant communities and their informal ties. Look at the work of Cátia Antunes and Ernesto Castro on diaspora networks and cross-cultural brokers. Also, dive into the "Journal of Portuguese History" and "Revista Brasileira de História" from the last five years; they consistently feature articles using new methodologies to interrogate the nature of this commercial empire, focusing on agency and local integration rather than just imperial policy.
