What effects does atropine have on the cardiovascular system?
While preparing a lecture on cholinergic antagonists, I want to move beyond the textbook fact that it increases HR. I need a more integrated understanding of its effects on cardiac output, blood pressure, and coronary circulation to explain its full therapeutic profile and potential adverse effects to my students.

From my experience in the ICU, atropine's primary and most reliable effect is chronotropy increasing heart rate. This can subsequently improve cardiac output in a rate-dependent heart. Importantly, I have seen that it has little to no direct inotropic or vasoactive effect. Its impact on blood pressure is therefore variable and indirect. I would recommend remembering that atropine can cause a initial, transient bradycardia, and at high doses, it may induce peripheral vasodilation via a complex mechanism, which is why monitoring the full hemodynamic picture is crucial.
