From my experience working across disciplines, communication theories are most useful when they clarify rather than replace literary concerns. I have seen semiotics, narrative communication, and reception theory integrate especially well with close reading. I would recommend avoiding overly instrumental models of transmission. Literature thrives on ambiguity, so theories that account for interpretation, miscommunication, and context tend to be the most productive.
