How can a student or researcher realistically access professional antenna design software?

I often see references to professional antenna design software like HFSS, CST, or FEKO in research papers.
However, licensing costs seem prohibitive for independent researchers or early-stage PhD students.
I want to understand what legitimate access routes exist and how people typically gain hands-on experience with these tools.

From my experience, most researchers access professional antenna software through their university rather than individual purchase. I have seen academic licenses bundled with institutional agreements, giving students full-feature access on campus or via VPN. I would recommend first checking with your department or central IT office, as many licenses exist but are under-publicized. Short-term trial licenses are also useful for focused work. In practice, learning one major tool well matters more than owning it personally, since research environments usually provide access when needed.
