How does synthetic biology integrate engineering principles with biological research?

As an engineer moving into bio-related research, the term "synthetic biology" is used very broadly. I need a clear, practical explanation of how core engineering tenets like standardization and modular design are being operationally implemented. This will help me design more rigorous and reproducible projects in my new lab.

In my work, I see synthetic biology not just as using biology for engineering. It applies principles like standardization, creating universal biological parts (BioBricks) so a promoter works reliably across systems. It uses abstraction, hiding genetic complexity so one can work with functional modules. Most importantly, it adopts the Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle. We design a genetic circuit with a predicted function, build it using DNA assembly, test its output, and use the data to refine the next design iteration. This transforms biology from observational science into a predictable engineering discipline.
