How should I approach simulating a spiral antenna integrated with EBG structures in CST?

I am working on a spiral antenna design and plan to integrate an EBG structure to improve isolation or radiation behavior.
While CST offers multiple solvers and boundary options, the combined modeling feels nontrivial.
I want to understand best practices for setup, meshing, and interpretation when spiral antennas and EBGs interact.

From my experience, the key to simulating spiral antennas with EBGs in CST is to treat the antenna and the periodic structure as a coupled system rather than separate parts. I have seen many issues arise from insufficient mesh resolution at the spiral arms and EBG gaps, so local mesh refinement is essential. I would recommend starting with a finite EBG array, not an infinite one, to reflect practical behavior. Carefully checking field plots helps confirm whether surface waves are actually being suppressed.
