Do watermarks on AI content promote transparency or reinforce bias against tools like ChatGPT?

Are AI content watermarks a tool for honest disclosure or a form of prejudice that undermines AI's value?

Watermarks are a crude technical tool for provenance but risk creating a harmful binary ("pure" human vs. "tainted" AI). This can unfairly stigmatize legitimate AI-assisted work. A more balanced solution is a standardized disclosure taxonomy (e.g., specifying the tool used, the extent of its use, and the nature of human editing). This promotes nuanced transparency, allows for proper evaluation of the intellectual work, and focuses on the ethical use and verification of content rather than its origin. Disclosure should be mandatory; binary labeling is reductive.
