Are researchers and scientists the biggest problem for the environment?

Research labs use energy, produce waste, and sometimes create technologies that harm the planet. Could we argue that researchers themselves are among the top offenders against the ecosystem?

That's a provocative but misplaced charge. While research activity has a footprint, its core purpose is the pursuit of knowledge and solutions. The greater offense lies in the irresponsible application and scaling of innovations by industry, and in the overconsumption they enable. Researchers aren't blameless—they must practice sustainable science—but they also hold the unique role of diagnosing problems and creating the mitigations. The problem isn't knowledge creation; it's the disconnect between discovery and responsible implementation.
