What’s the standard page limit or word count for a PhD synopsis‑ Is it different from a full proposal?

My department asked for a synopsis but didn't specify length. I've written 8 pages. Is that too long for a synopsis, or should it be even shorter, like an extended abstract?

From my experience, a PhD synopsis is typically 3 to 5 pages single-spaced (approximately 1500-2500 words). Your 8-page draft is likely too long and venturing into full proposal territory. A synopsis is a dense summary, not an exhaustive plan. Aim to distill the core of your research: problem, gap, objectives, methodology, and expected contribution—nothing more. If you're over 5 pages, critically edit each section. Remove detailed literature reviews, extensive bibliographies, and overly complex timelines. The committee needs to grasp the project's essence quickly. A crisp, powerful 4-page synopsis is always more impressive than a meandering 8-page one.
